WAVERLY — A 90-year-old downtown Waverly staple is closing its doors.
Waverly Palace Theatre, 90 E. Bremer Ave., announced the closing abruptly on its Facebook page Sunday night.
After several people asked why in the comments, another post appeared an hour later explaining the theater had been losing money and it was unclear what would happen to the business or the building.
Waverly Palace Theatre general manager Brandon Zelle did not immediately respond to phone or email messages seeking comment. The theater’s website also was updated to replace the movie list with “Theatre is closed permanently.”
A post Feb. 8 notified moviegoers one of the three theaters inside was closed due to a broken furnace.
Dozens expressed their disappointment at the decision on Facebook, with several bemoaning they were now stuck with unusable Groupon passes.
