Menards is adding its fifth store in the Des Moines area

Menards Inc. has started construction on a 200,000-square-foot store in Grimes.

The Wisconsin-based home improvement retailer’s latest metro store will be located at 300 NE Destination Drive, which is at Iowa Highway 141 and East First Street in Grimes, north of Walmart.

The store will have a full-service lumberyard, garden center, building materials, hardware, electrical and lighting, millwork, cabinets, appliances, paint, plumbing, housewares and flooring, groceries, and pet and wildlife supplies.

Along with the main store, the site will include a 50,000-square-foot accessories building, according to city documents. A 14-foot wooden fence will be built around the site, which is standard at other Menards stores, the company said.

“We have 20 Menards stores located throughout the state of Iowa. The new Grimes store will be built in our largest format and be similar in size as our stores in Altoona, Ankeny, and Clive,” Jeff Abbott, Menards spokesman, in an email. It also operates a store on Southeast 14th Street in Des Moines.

The store is expected to open next summer.
