Improvisational beyond their classical training, the trio Time for Three performs in Des Moines Dec. 9.

HIGH-ENERGY TRIO PRESENTS HOLIDAY CONCERT

Civic Music Association presents the dynamic trio Time for Three (Tf3) in a holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9, at Drake University’s Sheslow Hall.

The trio transcends traditional classification, with elements of classical, country-western, gypsy and jazz idioms forming a blend with a passion for improvisation. Tf3’s high-energy performances are free of conventional practices, drawing instead from the members’ differing musical backgrounds. The trio also performs its own arrangements of traditional music and original compositions.

Yet, even while performing at Carnegie Hall, the group refers to itself as a "classically trained garage band."

Formed by music students in Philadelphia, Tf3 has performed with major orchestras and in grand concert halls worldwide, including a PBS concert program. For tickets ($30-$60) and more information, click here.

Traditional European huts are a hallmark of shopping the Christkindlmarket, back for a second year at Cowles Commons.

CHRISTKINDLMARKET RETURNS THIS WEEKEND

By Wini Moranville

I thoroughly enjoyed last year’s inaugural Christkindlmarket Des Moines. What the European-inspired yuletide market and street fair may have lacked in size, it made up for in charm. This year’s expanded event will be held this coming weekend, Dec. 1-3, at Cowles Commons. Like last year, it will feature music and dance performances, kids’ activities and food and craft vendors—many selling their wares out of traditional handcrafted wooden stalls.

Food-lovers will want to seek out the German, Swiss and English chocolates; marzipan confections; and European baked goods, such as pannetone, German and English biscuits, and stollen. What a great way to gather treats for holiday or munch your way through the market’s shopping experience.

According to organizer Suzanne Hull, this year’s upgrades include two-times more vendor stalls than last year, as well as more demonstrations and extra space for serving glühwein (mulled wine) and beer. New vendors include Amana Woolen Mills, The Permanent Collection Letterpress and Prairie Products (crafters of wooden ornaments, Christmas arches, nutcrackers and more) among others.

In addition, a new Christmas store will showcase hand-blown German ornaments as well as hand-painted ornaments by a local Lithuanian artist. Music performances will include, among others, Stu Ryan O’Brian (singing Irish traditional and pub classics), Victorian-dressed carolers and plenty of polka: Look for Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen (an accordion-forward mix of polka and Czech music, with some country and big band thrown in) and Malek’s Fishermen Band (playing old-time European-style polka). The Schuhplattler Gruppe Edelweiss, a traditionally costumed Bavarian folkdance group from St. Paul, Minnesota, will offer four performances at various times during the fete.

The event’s hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Find out more at christkindlmarketdsm.com.

Eclectic Design The definition of Eclectic is “deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.” Which is why Eclectic design is the style most of us end up using to decorate our homes. As cool as all the other design styles we’ve covered are…most people’s home (and personalities) are not just one style. ... Read more »

Groovy, baby. New York City life in the '70s is presented without photo editing in a new exhibit at the Des Moines Art Center.

AN ARRAY OF NEW SHOWS IN LOCAL GALLERIES

When you need a break from holiday shopping and preparations, Des Moines art galleries have some new exhibits to distract you from it all.

The Des Moines Art Center will open the photo exhibit "Fink/Winogrand" in the John Brady Print Gallery this Friday, Dec. 1. Larry Fink and Garry Winogrand were active photographers in New York City in the 1970s. Winogrand primarily made photographs during the day of people on the city streets. While their subject matter was different, their working style and resulting photographs are similar in that they employed what was called the snapshot aesthetic,” images presented raw, without darkroom or digital enhancements.

Hopes rise on the power of pies and dreams in "Waitress," at the Des Moines Civic Center Dec. 5-10.

LIFE AS SIMPLE AS PIE: 'WAITRESS' OPENS DEC. 5

Tickets are still available for the delightful, award-winning musical comedy "Waitress," presented Dec. 5-10 at the Des Moines Civic Center. Inspired by Adrienne Shelly's film of the same name, "Waitress" tells the story of a waitress and expert pie maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest offers her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. Watch for a young local actress in the final scene: Isabelle Lee Busch, 4, of Des Moines, and Eliana Mann, 5, of Urbandale, will alternate the role of “Lulu,” the daughter of the show's main character. Showtimes and ticket prices vary; for details, visit dmpa.org.

A curious relationship unfolds about this time every year.
