Ankeny's Prairie Trail district and its town square, above, will be the host of the World Championship Chili Cook-Off competition.

A Chili Champion Will Be Crowned!  

Some of the best chili chefs will descend on Ankeny's Prairie Trail district for the World Championship Chili Cook-Off. The event will begin with a kickoff party at 6 tonight, ending at 10 p.m., then continues at 11 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday. More than 300 recipes are entered into the contest, curated from more than 125 competitions in 39 states. The winning concoction will earn more than $100,000 in prize money.

The three-day weekend includes craft beer, spirits, live music, family-friendly activities and, of course, chili tasting, grilling and baking. There will also be other food, beer, retail and craft vendors. One-day admission is $7 if tickets are bought online, including four free samples of chili. Two-day admission is $12 online with eight free chili samples.

A Guide to Love and Murder

The Des Moines Community Playhouse's new show, "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder," which debuts at 7:30 tonight, was the most-nominated show of the 2014 Broadway season. Weekend showtimes are 7:30 Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays until Sept. 29. Learn more



Iowa Cubs Playoffs

For the first time since 2008, the Iowa Cubs, the minor-league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, have clinched a spot in the postseason. Game 3 of the best-of-five, first-round series against the Round Rock Express will kick off at 7:08 tonight at Principal Park. Games 4 and 5 will be played, if necessary, at 7:08 p.m. Saturday and 12:08 p.m. Sunday, respectively.

Sculpture Park Anniversary

The Des Moines Art Center is hosting a 10th anniversary celebration for the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park at 4-7 p.m. tomorrow. The event is free and will feature live music, food trucks, a kid zone, tours, light refreshments and a cash bar. An art exhibition called "Sculpting Our Community" will also be showcased, weather permitting. Learn more



Concours d'Elegance

More than 150 exclusive vintage and classic motor vehicles will be on display for the annual Des Moines Concours d'Elegance, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park. Food, merchandise and cars from local clubs will also be showcased. Admission is free. Learn more

Home Tour


One of the oldest neighborhoods in Des Moines, River Bend features homes dating back to the 1870s. The neighborhood association is hosting a home tour at 10 a.m.-4 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday. Tickets are $12.50 in advance, $15 day-of. Learn more
