Food From Around the Globe

Des Moines' annual World Food and Music Festival starts today, and it's returning with plenty of ethnic food favorites from around the world. Bhutan, Bosnia, Liberia, Thailand and Laos are just a few of the countries represented on the festival's vast vendor list. Admission is free for the event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. today and tomorrow and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Western Gateway Park.

The festival's main stage will feature live music and local bands, including the Maytags (7:30-9 tonight), B2wins (9:30-11 tonight) and Decoy (7:30-9 p.m. tomorrow). If you arrive from 4 to 6 p.m. today, take advantage of the happy hour at the Festival Front Porch, which will have international beer samplings, lawn games and live music. Receive special color-changing cups for $1 off your drinks during happy hour.

The Symphony Debuts

The Des Moines Symphany is kicking off its new season with "Gil Shaham Plays Tchaikovsky" at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. A second show will be played at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Grammy award-winning violinist Gil Shaham is the guest star. Admission ranges from $20 to $55.

Passport to Prosperity

The Iowa International Center's annual Passport to Prosperity awards honor select immigrants and refugees who make the Iowa community better. Johnny Alcivar, Elizabeth Balcarcel, Atul Gupta and Mazahir Salih are this year's honorees.The event starts at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Drake's Olmstead Center. Tickets are $60.

Art on the Lake

Hosted at Copper Creek Lake Park in Pleasant Hill, Art on the Lake, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. tomorrow, will feature local musicians, food vendors and more than 50 artists. There will also be an interactive kids’ crafts area called Lil’ Artist Alley. Admission to the event is free.

Beaverdale Fall Festival

Beaverdale will host its annual fall festival with the theme "Rock the Neighborhood." A carnival, parade, food vendors, live music, car show and more will be featured. The event starts at 5 tonight and continues at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the corner of Beaver and Urbandale avenues.
Admission is free.
