Food From Around the GlobeDes Moines' annual World Food and Music Festival starts today, and it's returning with plenty of ethnic food favorites from around the world. Bhutan, Bosnia, Liberia, Thailand and Laos are just a few of the countries represented on the festival's vast vendor list. Admission is free for the event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. today and tomorrow and 11 a.m. to 5
p.m. Sunday at Western Gateway Park.
The festival's main stage will feature live music and local bands, including the Maytags (7:30-9 tonight), B2wins (9:30-11 tonight) and Decoy (7:30-9 p.m. tomorrow). If you arrive from 4 to 6 p.m. today, take advantage of the happy hour at the Festival Front Porch, which will have international beer samplings, lawn games and live music. Receive special color-changing cups for $1 off your drinks during happy hour.

The Symphony Debuts The Des Moines Symphany is kicking off its new season with "Gil Shaham Plays Tchaikovsky" at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. A second show will be played at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Grammy award-winning violinist Gil Shaham is the guest star. Admission ranges from $20 to $55. Learn more

Passport to Prosperity
The Iowa
International Center's annual Passport to Prosperity awards honor select immigrants and refugees who make the Iowa community better. Art on the Lake
