GREAT WEEKENDS BEGIN HERE

Live and Local Music at the Republic

The Republic on Grand offers some of the best in local music with live shows weekly. This week is no exception. Taylor King will perform from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Pair the Republic's music lineup with its ambience, and that makes it one of the best casual spots in Des Moines. Located on the top floor of the AC Hotel in the East Village, the Republic offers plush divans, a swanky decor and expansive views of downtown. But the best part is outside: Terraces along two sides provide some of the best outdoor seating in town, and they swell with a see-and-be seen crowd. Better yet, heat lamps keep them open even in less-than-summery weather. Look for craft cocktails—many created and named in honor of Des Moines neighborhoods—and a good beer and wine list. A limited selection of polished bar food is available; service could be more engaged, but by all means, go anyway.
