Sommelier Showdown

Winefest will pit two of Des Moines' best sommeliers against each other in its annual Iron Somm event, 6 p.m. tonight at the Temple for Performing Arts Ballroom. Kelsey Seay with Best Case Wines will defend her crown against Rae Doyle of Park Street Kitchen. The event features a five-course dinner with wine pairings from the two contestants.

Food will be prepared by chefs from Django, Splash Seafood Bar and Grill, Cater DSM, and Creme Cupcakes and Desserts, along with some tasty hors d'oeurves from the Cheese Bar. Tickets are $150 per person.

The Music of the Carpenters

Singer and playwright Lisa Rock has created a tribute band dedicated to the music of the Carpenters. Performing classic hits like "We've Only Just Begun," "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Close to You," Rock and her six-piece band strive to re-create the Carpenters' 1970s sound. Shows are at 5 and 8 p.m. tomorrow at Temple Theater. Learn more



Heritage Gallery Show and Awards

Polk County Heritage Gallery is presenting awards for its first-ever juried photography exhibition, called "Captured in Des Moines." About 70 photos were nominated for awards, and photographer Ben Easter will name the winners of various honors, including a best of show. A public reception is from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

'The Lion in Winter'

The play that became a classic film, "The Lion in Winter" portrays a family of ambitious siblings vying to inherit the kingdom. The show, presented by the Iowa Stage Theatre Company, starts today at the Des Moines Social Club's Kum and Go Theater. There are also performances tomorrow and Sunday.
