FOOD AND DINING
Three Dips for the Final Four

Friday night’s Final Four matchup between the mighty women of Iowa and South Carolina could be stressful. So go ahead: You have our express permission to tranquilize your jagged nerves with some party dips. It’s your right as an Iowan.

“I find myself usually eating dip on game days. It makes a great snack to share,” Iowa Culinary Institute graduate and blogger Rachel Walker told our contributing food writer Karla Wash for an article in the current issue of dsm. Walker recommends a BLT dip with plenty of bacon for an early taste of summer.

Chef Rateb Aburas of Mulberry Street Tavern was introduced to a variety of ingredients and flavors early in life, thanks to his Palestinian father’s Middle Eastern restaurant. His warm fava bean dip is “easy to make, yet able to add so much flavor to any meal of the day,” he said. It’s “very nostalgic and warming to me, not to mention the fact that it’s also healthy and a great source of protein.”

Check out the full article to find the recipes for Walker’s BLT dip, Aburas’ warm fava bean dip, and a roasted poblano and corn dip by chef James Arbaugh of Lua Brewing. And make a whole bunch: It may be a wild weekend.

Blank Park Zoo's Wild Lights Festival Shines Again

If you missed last week’s Northern Lights display, look on the bright side: The popular Wild Lights Festival returns Saturday to Blank Park Zoo. Throughout the zoo, visitors can see 50 different larger-than-life Asian lanterns in shapes ranging from insects and endangered animals to mythical creatures. The glowing figures will light up the night at 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday through Sunday through May 29. Reserve tickets in advance.
PLAN YOUR WEEKEND

The Lion King” at the Civic Center (various times all weekend): The national tour of the classic Disney musical returns Thursday for a two-week run through April 16, with all the music and dazzling puppetry that made it famous. Fans have already stampeded to the Des Moines Performing Arts box office, but a few tickets are still up for grabs for opening weekend.

“Trouble in Mind” from Iowa Stage Theatre (7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday): Alice Childress’ play about a Black actor who navigates her role in a well-meaning “race play” at a white theater premiered in 1955, just four years before “A Raisin in the Sun” landed on Broadway and made Lorraine Hansberry famous. That fame might have shone on Childress, but she refused to rewrite her story to suit white tastes. It finally opened on Broadway in 2021 and will be staged here in Des Moines through April 9 at the Des Moines Civic Center’s Stoner Theater. Get tickets online.

Iowa Cubs opening weekend (7 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday): Baseball season is up to bat. The Iowa Cubs' season opens this weekend with a homestand against the Columbus Clippers of Ohio. Fireworks will follow Friday night’s game, no matter who wins or loses at Principal Park. Find tickets online.

Chef and comedian Alex Carter at Teehee’s (7 p.m. Friday): The pastry chef and comedian Alex Carter combines cooking and comedy into one delicious evening. He recounts his experience as a contestant on the Food Network’s “Chopped Sweets” before cooking up a challenge of his own, daring four other comedians to create five-minute comedy sets using four comedic “ingredients.” Tickets are required.

Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus at Drake (7:30 p.m. Saturday): The 50-some men, women and nonbinary singers of the chorus focus their spring concert on the LGBTQ community’s ongoing struggle for equal rights. The program, “Battles Fought and Won,” celebrates milestones in recent history and calls attention to challenges and opportunities ahead. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the event, at Drake University’s Sheslow Auditorium.

ARTS AND CULTURE
Hoyt Sherman centennial: A lineup of local artists gather tonight to present “Once Upon This Stage,” a variety show that celebrates some of the famous folks – like Agnes de Mille, John Phillip Sousa and Meredith Willson – who have performed at Hoyt Sherman Place since its theater opened in 1923. B. Well (pictured), for example, will share two poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay as well as some of his own work. Looking ahead, the theater just announced that the Wallflowers will swing by for a concert on Aug. 15. Tickets are on sale now.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR
One Iowa Gala: One Iowa, the nonprofit that advocates for LGBTQ rights, will host its 14th annual gala on June 30 to honor community leaders, raise funds and round out Pride Month. After a short program, guests will be treated to plenty of appetizers, dancing and a silent auction. Tickets are on sale now.
ARTS AND CULTURE
Vote for Team Des Moines: Red Bull recently invited a local skate crew from Des Moines to participate in a DIY challenge: create a skatepark out of 24 ice blocks and two sheets of plywood. Invited teams had three hours to skate their pop-up parks and produce a 60-second video of their run. Winners will be judged by a panel of skate legends, but the public can vote by the end of today for the people's choice award.
IOWA STOPS HUNGER
Easter meals: Hope Ministries will serve a free Easter meal from noon to 1 p.m. April 8 at the Hope Cafe, at 1310 Sixth Ave. They also plan to deliver meals on the same day to folks who are struggling and homebound, so spread the word. The deadline to sign up for a meal delivery is this Friday. Iowa Stops Hunger is an ongoing Business Publications Corp. initiative to raise awareness of food insecurity and inspire action to combat it.
