A brilliant atrium is the highlight of the renovation and expansion of Des Moines Metro Opera's facilities in Indianola.

ROAD TRIP: NEW ISSUE UNVEILING UNDER GLASS

We're very excited about the unveiling party for our July/August issue, which will be in the newly expanded headquarters of Des Moines Metro Opera at 106 W. Boston Ave. in downtown Indianola. Where visitors once whispered in the former public library, today they're as likely to burst into song – and there's plenty to sing about. We got a preview of the place before it officially reopened and, believe us, it is well worth the short drive to see it for yourself.

We'll be there with a few hundred friends for the unveiling party next Tuesday, June 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. We hope you can join us, whether for a few minutes or a couple of hours. Have a drink and a bite, make new friends and get a copy of dsm magazine after brief comments and the unveiling at 6 p.m.

Catch them while you can, or make your own. Just don't miss out on the taste treat of a French fruit coulis.

FRUIT PUREES FROM PYRENEES OR YOUR KITCHEN

By Wini Moranville

I love the pairing of a cool and creamy dessert with an intensely bright, sweet-tart fruit sauce. The combo of richness and refreshment never fails to thrill, especially on warm summer nights.

To this end, one of my favorite things to make is what’s known as a fruit coulis a French sauce that’s usually made simply with pureed fruit, sugar and maybe some lemon juice to keep it bright and colorful. The pureed mixture is strained for a pure, intense and entirely elegant dessert condiment.

Commercial coulis are hard to find, but I spotted some jars of it at World Market. While Daniel Boudet’s versions are labeled as "purees," they're definitely what the French would call a coulis (in fact, that’s how the bottles are labeled in France). Choose from raspberry, blueberry and strawberry; they’re especially amazing on panna cotta, vanilla cheesecake and ice cream.

Here’s the catch: World Market’s stock varies, which means something you fall in love with one week can be gone the next. Never fear — if they run out of this luscious sauce, enjoy my recipe. In fact, you can make up a homemade version in much less time than it takes to drive to the West Des Moines store.

Raspberry Coulis

1 (12-ounce) package frozen unsweetened raspberries, thawed
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Put the raspberries, sugar and balsamic vinegar in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Press the sauce through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl to remove any seeds; discard the seeds. Cover and refrigerate the coulis until ready to serve. Makes about 1 1/4 cups.

For the next week, Des Moines is all about artistry. This striking skyline image was drawn by Andrew Aagard.

ART WEEK: A JUBILEE OF ARTISTIC DIVERSITY

Art Week, the thoroughly fun ramp-up to the Des Moines Arts Festival, starts Friday, June 21. We love the range of events 67 this year! and locations involved, plus the seemingly spontaneous nature of it all. There is just so much to see and do, all delightfully random.

Art Week events are not centrally orchestrated; they're the joyful ideas of creative individuals and groups who work independently and add their piece to the jumble of activities. There's something charming about such purposeful disorganization. So we're fans.

Of course, someone has to rein it all in. This year, that's artist Rachel Buse, who says she has been "surprised and inspired" by the experience. "More artists are involved than ever, collaborating in group shows and experimenting in new ways," she says.

New this year:
  • Limited Space | Art Week Opening Ceremony: Come to see the best artists Des Moines has to offer and then dance the night away with Lyndrum and DJ Rock Paper Scissors.
  • West End Art Amble: Artists have claimed the west end from the Fitch Building to the Social Club, between the sculpture park and the Art Terrarium. Walk from each end and explore studios, mini golf, live performances and other attractions.
  • Wooly’s HeART Show: An interactive, collaborative showcase of six artists. Reserve your free ticket to this surprise sampling of art in its many forms

Check out the complete
Art Week schedule of events with everything from poetry to a parade. And, of course, this year's Arts Festival is June 28-30.

Murder and mayhem strike comedic gold in "The Play That Goes Wrong," opening June 25 at the Des Moines Civic Center.

'THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG' SOUNDS RIGHT

So we're guessing this may be amusing. Consider the critics' reviews of "The Play That Goes Wrong," coming to the Des Moines Civic Center June 25-30:
  • "Comic gold." — Variety
  • "A riotous explosion of comedy." — The Daily Beast
  • "Tons of fun for all ages." — Huffington Post
  • "A gut-busting hit." — The New York Times
  • "Nothing is as fall-down funny!" — New York Post

Sounds like a fun evening to us. The madcap whodunit has been a hit from Broadway to London. Tickets range from $36 to $121, available at the Civic Center ticket office or online at dmpa.org.

BLURRING THE LINES OF PHOTO REALISM

Cedar Falls artist Noah Doely will discuss his work in a public lecture at 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, at the Des Moines Art Center. A reception with the artist follows in the lobby of the museum.

Doely's distinctive work focuses on photography, he says, "because of its complicated relationship to truth and verifiability and its paradoxical ability to evoke both trust and skepticism." Keeping this in mind, the artist creates pictures that are purposefully deceptive and blur the distinction between reality and illusion.

For example, this exhibit features photographs that look like caves illuminated by rays of light. But in fact, they show sections of a diorama Doely constructed, lit from a single source and photographed using a pinhole camera. From these mysterious images Doely asks that we become active inquisitors, questioning authenticity and what’s presented before us.

Doely is an associate professor of photography at the University of Northern Iowa.

British artist D*Face, whose distinctive public art is prominent in cities around the world, is included in the new Moberg exhibit.

MOBERG FEATURES STREET ARTISTS

Work by world-renowned muralists and street artists is featured in an exhibition opening Friday, June 21, at Moberg Gallery. Artist Jason Woodside has curated the show, which includes his own art as well as works by Swoon, D*Face, Ruben Sanchez, Adele Renault, Pref ID, ItsALiving, Adam Lucas, Maser, and Buff Monster.
The exhibit, which continues through July 27, opens with a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.
