TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE FOR SAGES OVER 70 EVENT

Tickets are now available for the Nov. 11 reception at which we will celebrate the civic contributions of this year's Sages Over 70.

They’ll be the toast of the town as we honor their accomplishments in the November/December issue of dsm magazine and pay tribute to them personally at the annual reception, this year at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel, where each will share insights into their approach to life. In addition to success in their own careers, each has contributed significantly in the personal development of others, in the growth of Greater Des Moines, and in support of charitable causes and institutions. This year’s Sages:
    • Penny Furgerson, choreographer, pharmacist and mentor.
    • Ruth Ann Gaines, legislator, teacher and mentor.
    • Ruth and Tom Harkin, double honorees who have devoted their lives to public service.
    • John Pappajohn, business developer and philanthropist.
    • Ila Plasencia, Latina community leader and civic volunteer.
    • Mary Seidler, banker, commercial real estate broker and arts advocate .

Don't miss the reception. It's a highlight on our calendar, leaving attendees inspired and proud of the community we share. Tickets are $50 each. Click here for tickets and more information.

For a dinner at New York's legendary Beard House, local chef Lynn Pritchard prepared this salmon dish (detailed in story).

TABLE 128 WINE DINNER TO BENEFIT MENTAL HEALTH

By Wini Moranville

"One in five American adults experience mental illness," says Lynn Pritchard, chef-owner of the Clive restaurant Table 128. And, he estimates, "It’s double that in our industry."

To help, Table 128 is hosting an exclusive wine dinner with Staglin Family Vineyards to benefit Broadlawns Medical Center Mental Health Services. The dinner will be held on World Mental Health Day, which is this Thursday, Oct. 10.

Located in Napa Valley, the Staglin winery is renowned both for its highly regarded premium wines and for its commitment to mental health: The company donates 100% of the proceeds from its Salus Estate wines to mental health research. Limited to just 42 guests, Table 128’s intimate, five-course dinner sounds like a culinary masterwork; the braised short rib with dark cherry, cocoa and cippolini onion especially caught my eye. Check out the entire menu and purchase tickets here. The cost is $186, inclusive of service, tax and a $30 donation to the cause.

Apropos of Pritchard, the chef recently showcased his talents at New York City’s historic Beard House, the headquarters of the James Beard Foundation. Cooking at this Greenwich Village brownstone, which hosts culinary events to support the foundation, is a top honor bestowed on chefs of national or regional reputation.

The dinner featured six chefs from across the country. They were selected by the hosting sponsor, Skuna Bay, purveyors of salmon that’s raised by a small group of farmers in a natural ocean environment off the coast of Vancouver Island. The company is dedicated to providing chefs with quality salmon while reducing pressure on wild fish populations.

Each chef offered a starter and a small main plate featuring the salmon. Pritchard’s main-plate contribution was pan-seared Skuna Bay salmon with lobster gougère, sweet corn-sweet pea chowder and white sturgeon caviar.

Since returning from the Sept. 24 event, Pritchard has offered the dish on two separate Saturday nights at Table 128. He said he might do so again, but don’t hold your breath. This chef once told me that he hated signature recipes. "Creation and innovation course through our blood," he says of his team. "We’re not satisfied with what we did yesterday. We want today to be better."

So could your next Skuna Bay salmon dish at T-128 be even better than what was served at the iconic Beard House? It’s nice to know that’s the goal.

Table 128 is at 12695 University Ave. #140; 515-327-7427; table128bistro.com.

Who knows what may creep from the fog of an autumn evening? Especially on the spooky night of the first-ever Ghoulish Gala.

GHOULISH MERRIMENT AWAITS AT SALISBURY HOUSE

If costumes are your kind of fun, this is your kind of event. The Ghoulish Gala, the ultimate Halloween party, plays out in the shadows of stately Salisbury House on Oct. 19

It's a macabre benefit for the Salisbury House Foundation, with a dark and deadly elegance. Guests will arrive in the Great Hall, crossing a smoky red carpet into a realm where skulking may be a dance step. A cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner in the moody Common Room, then dancing.

"The ambiance of the historic house is the perfect fit for such a unique event," says Kit Curran, executive director of Salisbury House and Gardens. "As we continue to expand our programming, we are excited to offer this new experience unlike any other Halloween event in Des Moines."

Tickets are $175 and include the cocktail hour, dinner and hosted bar with party. This event has a limited number of tickets so reservations are required by this Friday, Oct. 11. Get tickets at salisburyhouse.org or by calling 515-274-1777.

Featured artists in the show of abstract and representational work are Diana Behl, Jen P. Harris, Anna Lambrini Moisiadis, Catherine Reinhart, April South-Olson, Molly Spain, Priscilla Steele and Allison Svoboda. The exhibition continues through November.

MEET OUR FAVORITE COOKBOOK AUTHOR

We're excited for a book-signing and author discussion featuring longtime dsm collaborator Wini Moranville, who wrote the newly released "The Little Women Cookbook."

Regular readers have come to know Wini as an excellent writer and a genuine authority on food and wine. Some of us at dsm had the pleasure of previously working with her both at the Des Moines Register, where she wrote restaurant reviews, and at Meredith, where she shared her expertise through the Better Homes and Gardens brand.

She is also the author of "The Bonne Femme Cookbook: Simple, Splendid Food That French Women Cook Every Day." Her newest project is especially dear to her and, she says, "the book was so fascinating to write."

"I was so moved by the way food plays such a prominent role in Louisa May Alcott's masterpiecethe sharing of food is so often a part of lessons learned, love made visible, and meaningful gatherings in general.

"It was also a real trip to read through dozens of 19th-century cookbooks to see just how people cooked and ate back then. As an heirloom recipe geek, I was enthralled," she says.

For more about the book and to see one of the recipes, click here. Meet and hear from Wini at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, at Beaverdale Books.
