UI student-designed bra for breast cancer patients receives $10K for commercialization
A team of biomedical engineers and University of Iowa alumnae who designed a bra for breast cancer survivors won $10,000 from the Victoria’s Secret GRL PWR Project to put the bra into production, reports the UI press office. The former students will use the award money to file a patent for the GAMA bra, which is designed to help breast cancer survivors prevent lymphedema, a painful swelling that can occur in the arms or torso after a unilateral mastectomy. The GAMA bra provides preventative compression, along with support for the patient’s remaining breast. Designers Genevieve Goelz, Maria Fernanda Larraga Martinez, Anna Rodriguez and Ashten Sherman partnered with faculty in the College of Engineering, a cancer patient therapist in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and a seamstress in the Department of Theatre Arts when developing the prototype.

Researchers develop process to study how trees affect building temperatures, air flow
Researchers at Iowa State University have developed a model to test how shading and air flow can improve indoor temperatures during the sweltering heat of Midwestern summers, reports Iowa State University’s press office. New research led by ISU associate professor of architecture Ulrike Passe shows the effects of tree shading and evapotranspiration on building temperatures during extreme heat. Passe’s research group Sustainable Cities recently presented its findings at the Comfort at the Extremes 2019 Conference in Dubai.

'The Great Hack' follows the mother of all data drops

BY KATE HAYDEN: Have you watched "The Great Hack" on Netflix yet? I did, and came away feeling quite conflicted about some of the central individuals the documentary followed to understand the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal (and less conflicted about others). TechCrunch rounded up a few questions the documentary leaves behind. Be advised: You might feel a bit overwhelmed by the scale of it all.

innovationQ&A: Dawn M. Carlson
By Suzanne Behnke | Contributing writer

FUELIowa began in 1937 amid a battle between independent operators and the oil industry, starting with the name "Iowa Independent Oil Jobbers Association." The organization has evolved over the decades and now represents a diverse membership of fuel distributors, cooperatives, convenience and grocery stores, refiners, biofuel producers, and other firms.

President and CEO Dawn Carlson joined FUELIowa in 1995. Among her roles in leading the association are to keep an eye on the emerging trends in energy and fuel sectors, and to advocate for the industry with state leaders and other stakeholders. Technology and scientific research drive the industry. For instance, in recent years, the association developed its own software to help track renewable fuel credits that is now in use outside Iowa. Carlson is an Iowa native and an Iowa State University graduate with a degree in agribusiness management.
